Safe Food Handling Course

Huron County Health Unit’s Certified Food Handler Course teaches food handlers the general principles of safe food handling.

Under the new Food Premises Regulation, every food service premises must have at least one trained food handler or supervisor working when the premise is open.

In the Certified Food Handler Course, you will learn how to:

  • Prevent food-borne illnesses
  • Efficiently heat, cool, and store food
  • Recognize potential hazards when you receive and handle food
  • Control food quality and increase customer satisfaction

Anyone who prepares and handles food will benefit from this course.

  • One-day and one-hour exam taught by a public health inspector.
  • Food Handling Certificate upon successful completion of exam, valid for five years, and recognized by all Ontario health units.
  • Certificate and wallet card.
  • Quality resources, including workbook and food thermometer.

Cost: course fee+$10 for exam
  • 15 modules online at www.ingoodhands.ca.
  • Written exam at the Health Unit.

If your certification will expire next year, you can take a course and exam. They are offered by the health unit and include:

  • Same-day, two-hour course and one-hour exam taught by a public health inspector.
  • Food Handling Certificate upon successful completion of exam, valid for five years, and recognized by all Ontario health units.
  • Certificate and wallet card.
  • Class size: 25 people
Study at home + exam at health unit
Cost: varies
  • Buy a print manual from the Health Unit for $20 or view for free online.
  • You can then take the exam at the Health Unit for $10
Exam only
Cost: $10
You can write the exam without taking courses. Please contact the health unit to book a time.

You must register by contacting the Health Unit (unless otherwise indicated) at least two weeks prior to the start of each course. Class is limited to 25 students and fills quickly.

Cancellation Policy

Please be aware of our cancellation policy should you be unable to attend your scheduled session.

  • Cancellation two weeks before the course starts – participants receive a full refund minus cost of book and postage.
  • Cancellation less than two weeks before the course – no refund will be given.
  • Cancellation due to illness – no refund, however student will be allowed to reschedule once for another session held within the same calendar year.
  • Substitutions are allowed; the Health Unit must be provided with the name(s) of students involved in writing as soon as possible.
